It is always
a frustrating issue for every freshman in university to select a suitable
major. For me, my choice was bioengineering and I made this decision based on
the following reasons.
My experience in childhood absolutely had
one of the greatest influence to my. I developed my interest of Biology when I
was small. My family members
used to take me to visit different Country Parks with them. During the
visit, I could have a close contact and observation with the nature, such as
learning how to identify different species of plants, animals, etc. This
provided many opportunities for me to basically understand about different
forms of life in the ecosystem of Hong Kong. Besides, my parents used to buy
many biological book for me to read, it allows me .It really fascinated me in
my childhood, and also leaded me to have further study in the aspect of biology.
In
my senior secondary school years, I chose to study the elective of Biology.
This was because I wished to build up some fundamental knowledge before getting
into related Major in University. In my senior academic years of secondary
school, I got a lot of practical laboratory experience by performing different
experiments and I kept getting a satisfactory result in Biology. In the DSE
public examination, I got a level 5 in Biology; it motivated
me to have further investigation in Biology and
proved that I am capable of it.
In
order to turn my interest into my future career, the Bioengineering
Major was definitely my first consideration. Subjectively speaking, Biology
explored a new world which was fascinating to me. For example, the mechanisms
of cells, the classification system of organisms, the origin of life, etc. From
the microscopic world to the whole ecosystem of the earth, this indeed raised
my curiosity. Study of the Bioengineering Major will help me
find the method of make use of the biological knowledge to contribute to the
society.
On
the other hand, I discovered that I have interest in using computer when I
reached the stage of youngsters, as my parents bought me a desktop computer. In
my senior secondary school years, I took the elective of Information and
Technology, in order to examine my interest in computer science. However, I
found myself addicted in using computer for entertainment and lacked of
interaction with my families. The misusage of computer made me to know the fact
that what truly attracted me were the computer games, but not the knowledge of
computer science. Therefore, I chose to drop the elective of Information and
Technology at the end of form 4 secondary school year because I wanted to be
more concentrated in studying biology. Furthermore,
my mathematics score in secondary school is only average, and I only get level
4 in mathematics of DSE examination. Additionally, I took no extended module of
mathematics. It reflected that my mathematics and calculating ability is not my
best aspect.
Among
different options, most majors provided by the college of science and
engineering for engineering students required students to have deep
understanding of physics and mathematics. For instance, Civil Engineering or
Electronic and Communication Engineering, needed to work on a lot of
complicated calculation and programming, which was actually not what I like and
my strength.
To
conclude, my final selection will be the bioengineering major. The main factor
was interest of Biology since childhood, which could be the biggest motivation
of studying. Besides, I had no advantages in mathematics and little interest in
computer science, bioengineering which required less calculation would be
suitable for me. Therefore, I decided to go for bioengineering as my next year
major.

I stepped into the
classroom and she caught my eyes at first sight. There was an extraordinary
girl sitting at the corner of the classroom. She propped her chin with her hand slightly and elegantly.
The delicacy of her becomes even more beauteous under the refraction of sunlight and
her face, however, blurred by the strong light in the same way, showing another
kind of beauty, beauty of dreamily. The Shiny brown short hair was perfectly cut;
the pale skin was then bare, stood out against the blue school uniform. I
believe it was the most beautiful creature of the world.
The beautifulness of her
and my curiosity made me forgot to take my eyes of her. I took a sit behind her
and starred on her back. She run her left hand through her hair, a unique smell
radiated from her hair when the winds blow, it smelled like lavender in blossom, tasted like the sweetest honey, leading me to fall into
infinite imagination, nearly drive me into trance.
I
cannot see clearly of her face until the moment of the girl turned around. When
I looked closer, she was distinctive from others. The bangs of her black hair were
untidy, some were straight, some were curly, but surprisingly did not show
abrupt. I was astonished by her arbitrary impression.
Few red little pimples were most suitable decorations of her snowy face, makes
she looked even lovelier than anything I have seen. She looked at me; a pair of
black iris was like the universe, exuding the attractiveness of unexpected, unknown
and mysterious. I cannot resist the temptation of looking through the hole
inside, like a whirlpool that sucks my mind and souls into the pupil of her eyes.
I feasted my eyes on this beautiful scene, without blinking for a single time.
A voice
came from nowhere broke the silence, waked me up from the intoxication. She
started a conversation. “Hi, I am Gina, what’s your name?” She said with a calm
voice. Every word she pronounces is beating on my heart like a drum, her voice was
not a resounding, fragile or soft one, but it’s comfortable to be listened. “Hi,
I am Kelvin.” I said. “Nice to meet you” She said joyfully with a smile. The
curve of her lips is perfectly designed when she smiles. Her smile was powerful
as the strongest virus, infected me with her amusement.
Regardless of the short conversation,
it initiated our friendship. We started to understand each other every day in the
school life. Through my observation, she was not sociable or talkative as she kept
silence most of the time, but she has a lot of inspiration and she was creative
that always comes up with unpredictable and inscrutable
concepts, and expresses the ideas by her stylish drawings. That’s why she was fascinating.
